KLANG: Measures are being taken to ensure families receive financial benefit as soon as possible after the death of a contributor, said the Social Security Organisation (Socso).
The organisation would even go through newspapers to seek out reported cases of road accident fatalities, said Socso benefit division senior general manager Mohamad Fauzi Jaafar.
“Once we come across such news, we will contact the authorities for details and forward it to our relevant branches,” he said at a press conference at the Socso branch office here.
He added that a team had been formed to go through all newspapers daily to compile reported cases of death to be channelled to the right branch.
Mohamad Fauzi said the main reason behind the proactive stance was to ensure that family members of the deceased did not have to wait too long to get income replacement.
“There have been cases where family members report a death 10 to 15 years later.
“We backdate the payment to the date of death but we cannot replace the lost years,” said Mohamad Fauzi.
He said it was really sad when children had to give up studies or could not continue their education after the death of the sole breadwinner.
Mohamad Fauzi had earlier attended the launch of Klang Socso open day and accident prevention campaign.
