No misunderstanding, rally illegal, police warn Bersih 4

PETALING JAYA: The police on Wednesday reiterated its stand that the Bersih 4 rally on Aug 29 and 30 is illegal and action will be taken against the organisers.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Zainol Samah said after a meeting with Bersih 2.0 chief Maria Chin Abdullah that the organisers have not adhered to existing laws requiring them to get the permission for the use of Dataran Merdeka.

Maria, however, separately told reporters that police "had understood" that the protesters will not enter Dataran Merdeka and both sides were still discussing ways to go about the rally.

ACP Zainol said police have advised Bersih not to hold the rally but they insisted on pursuing their plans.

“It was our second meeting and we told them they have not met the requirements under Section 11 of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012,” ACP Zainol said.

He advised members of the public not to attend the rally planned for this weekend.

“It is clear cut. The rally is illegal,” he said.
