KUALA LUMPUR: Eighteen routes around Dataran Merdeka will be temporarily closed from Wednesday until Monday to make way for National Day preparations and celebrations.
City traffic police chief Asst Comm Mohd Nadzri Hussain said the routes will be closed at 6am daily and are expected to reopen in stages by noon each day.
He said Dataran Merdeka is closed off to the public prior to National Day for the convenience of those rehearsing and preparing for the celebrations on Aug 31.
"Only those who will be on duty on National Day are allowed to enter Dataran Merdeka through Bulatan Dato Onn - Jalan Gereja and park their vehicles in the underground parking lot.
"They need the necessary car stickers to enter Dataran Merdeka," he explained.
According to ACP Nadzri, exceptions will be made for VVIPs, VIPs, ambassadors and those with an official invitation to attend the celebrations.
Meanwhile, chartered buses were also allowed to drop off and fetch participants near Dataran Merdeka but drivers are required to use the assigned routes.
"We advise those involved in the celebrations to be at Dataran Merdeka before 6am as we will be closing the roads by then.
"We will allow the buses to drop off participants at Dataran Merdeka until 7am, but any later than that, the participants will have to be dropped off outside the cordoned areas," said ACP Nadzri.
ACP Nadzri noted that bus drivers need to get permission from the traffic officers on duty for any plans to fetch the participants from Dataran Merdeka.
"About 40 officers will be on duty during rehearsals and more than 70 officers will be working on National Day celebrations.
"We will take stern action, including issuing summonses, against individuals who park at the cordoned areas and obstruct traffic," he asserted.
About 7000 people are expected to participate in the National Day celebrations.
Police and military assets will also be part of the rehearsals and the parade on Aug 31.For more updates and information on road closures and diversions, please visit "Trafik KL" on Facebook and "trafik_kl" on Instagram.
