Najib: Umno willing to reveal accounts if opposition does the same

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak (pic) says Umno is prepared to unveil its party accounts on the condition the opposition is ready to do the same.

The Prime Minister, who is also UMNO president, said he was willing to do so at anytime as the funds received were solely in the interests of the party and not for personal interest.

"Are the opposition that taintless? If they want to know everything, they have to explain where are their funds are coming from...do not only accuse me and Umno while they are gleefully accepting (funds).

"As far as I know, they are also doing well with all kinds of stuff coming in," he said at the opening of the Bandar Tun Razak Umno division delegates meeting on Saturday.

He said as the Prime Minister, he is responsible for whatever happened.

"Do not say I am selling the country. I will never sell the country," he said.

Najib said that the donation received was not because he gave something to some parties.

"I accepted it not because I gave contracts. Other parties can also get the contract and some maybe succeed in converting land for development for those who donated. But there is no link at all.

"That is why the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said it is not a bribe and it is not 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) money," he said.

In this regard, he told Umno members to continue defending the party as what happened was in the interest of the party.

"We have assisted the divisions. We have carried out much corporate social responsibility for them. We have helped many who have not gone for pilgrimage to do so. We have also help restored many abandoned houses.

"Many divisions have also received contributions each month. So do not just keep quiet after receiving them. When I was under attack, some worsened the situation like pouring petrol into the fire.

The MACC on Wednesday confirmed RM2.6bil, which was channelled into the Prime Minister's account, was a contribution from a Middle East donor.

In a statement, the commission said: "MACC has obtained the clarification of the donor on the contribution to the Prime Minister." - Bernama
