We will probe rape-threat claim, says Dang Wangi OCPD

PETALING JAYA: Police will investigate claims that a policeman had threatened a female detainee with rape after she was picked up over the May 1 anti-GST rally.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Zainol Samah said Maisara Amira Mohamad Asmadi can have her statement recorded at any police ­station of her choice.

When met at the Kuala Lumpur traffic headquarters yesterday, ACP Zainol said that the Dang Wangi police had called Maisara Amira in to record her statement after she lodged a police report at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters on May 8, but she did not show up.

“She said she wanted to wait for her lawyer. She said she was traumatised.

“We can record her statement at a ­different station (other than Dang Wangi). It’s not a problem,” said ACP Zainol, who added that under Section 111 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the police had the authority to get Maisara Amira to give her statement.

Maisara Amira, who claimed she was threatened at the Dang Wangi police headquarters on May 5, spoke to reporters at the Persatuan Kesedaran Komuniti Selangor (Empower) office yesterday.

“The words he said were this: ‘You want me to rape you? In this room, only you and I are here. In this room, there is a camera and a microphone. So if I sell the video, I can be rich.’ I was threatened that way,” said the 21-year-old, who described her perpetrator as being in civilian clothing and not carrying any identification.

Maisara Amira, who was remanded for four days and remained silent during questioning, said the incident occurred hours before her release.

“He tried again and said ‘This way lah. I’m going to give you a chance. You answer all the questions given by the female officer. If not, I will ask her to get out. I will enter the room. And you settle with me’,” she added.

Maisara Amira was the only female detainee among the 23 youths who were arrested over the May 1 rally in Kuala Lumpur.

Mohamad Asmadi Mohamad Safari said he was worried for his daughter’s safety and urged the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar to investigate the matter.

Maisara Amira’s lawyers gave the police 48 hours to allow investigations to proceed at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters, instead of insisting that it be conducted at the site of the alleged offence.
