Rafizi, Hishamuddin Rais arrested over anti-GST rally

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli (pic) and activist Hishamuddin Rais have been arrested for their involvement in Friday’s anti-GST (Goods and Services Tax) rally.

A posting on Rafizi’s Facebook page at 12.04pm on Saturday indicated that the PKR leader was detained at Kuala Lumpur police headquarters after he’d gone there to offer “his cooperation” in connection with investigations into the rally.

Rafizi was then taken to the Dang Wangi police headquarters.

City CID chief Senior Asst Comm Zainuddin Ahmad said Rafizi was arrested for unlawful assembly under Section 143 of the Penal Code.

According to SAC Zainuddin, he will be detained overnight at the Jinjang central lockup. His remand hearing is scheduled for Sunday.

Hishamuddin, meanwhile, was arrested on Saturday at his house and brought to the Dang Wangi police headquarters, an online news portal reported.

SAC Zainuddin confirmed that Hishamuddin would also be detained overnight at the Jinjang central lockup before his remand hearing on Sunday.

He was also arrested for his involvement in Friday’s assembly.
