Three The Malaysian Insider editors detained at Jinjang lockup

PETALING JAYA: Three The Malaysian Insider (TMI) editors would be detained at the Jinjang central lockup after their arrest during a raid at the portal's office in Mutiara Damansara.

Kuala Lumpur CID chief Senior Asst Comm Zainuddin Ahmad said the trio would be investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act and Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multi­media Act 1998.

Managing editor Lionel Morais, Bahasa Malaysia features and analysis editor Zulkifli Sulong and Bahasa Malaysia news editor Amin Iskandar were arrested at about 5.45pm on Monday at Jalan PJU 7/6 here.

SAC Zainuddin said the raid was conducted by a team from the Bukit Aman Classified Crimes Unit (D5) and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

"Among items confiscated in the raid were laptops and mobile phones," he said.

The TMI editors were arrested to facilitate investigations over an article published last week.

On Thursday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar tweeted on his @KBAB51 account that the police would be calling in the editor-in-chief of TMI over an article published by the portal.

According to the article, the Conference of Rulers had reportedly rejected proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 during a meeting on March 11.

The article, which quoted sources, claimed that the rejection of the amendments to the federal Act was made at a meeting attended by all Malay Rulers or their representatives.

However, the Keeper of the Rulers' Seal Datuk Seri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad denied issuing any statement on hudud in Kelantan and had lodged a police report.
