KOTA KINABALU: An elderly Japanese man fell while descending Mount Kinabalu after reaching the 4,095m peak.

Yoshimasa Maekawa, 65, fell on the rock surface area of Sayat Sayat, and suffered head and facial injuries from the fall at about 7.45am on Tuesday.

However, he is reported to be in stable condition after he was brought to the Ranau hospital for treatment.

Mount Kinabalu operations centre official Martin Maguring said that Maekawa was brought down to the midway point at Laban Rata where he was given first aid.

"Subsequently, Sabah Air was requested to send a helicopter to bring him down to Kundasang town on the foothill of Mount Kinabalu before he was taken to Ranau hospital for immediate medical attention.

"The victim is in stable condition and would be sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment,’’ he said.

Maekawa was part of the second group that reached the peak and were on their way down.
