WASHINGTON: Malaysia has been having discussions with the US Department of Homeland Security on its admission into the Visa Waiver Programme, said Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Describing the discussions as "successful", the Home Minister said they also touched on other issues such as human trafficking and immigration matters.
"We also signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in immigration issues," he said following a meeting with Jeh Johnson, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, here on Thursday.
The MoU was on a checking mechanism that specifies two-way cooperation between the two countries for travellers to Malaysia, he added.
Zahid said the signing ceremony marked the end of his nine-day working visit to the United States, which started on Sept 24.
During his time in the United States, Zahid also met former New York Police Department (NYPD) chief Charles V. Campisi, to discuss collaboration with the Malaysian Police to enhance cooperation over matters concerning police integrity.
Zahid also made a working visit to the Joint Terrorism Task Force during his time in New York.
