Headmaster and son drown as car plunges into drain


KUCHING: Preparations for the start of the 2014 school session turned into a tragedy for a headmaster and her son after the car she was driving plunged into a 2m deep monsoon drain along the Samarahan-Asajay road near the Mata Parang bridge in Kota Samarahan.

The victim, Hamidah Johar, 49, was with her son Mainol Yakin, 11 and daughter 19, in a Multi Purpose Vehicle when the accident happened.

Hamidah and Manol were trapped inside the car and drowned in the 11.40am incident while passersby managed to save the daughter.

Kota Samarahan police chief DSP Lee Chong Chern when confirming the incident said it was raining when the accident happened.

Lee said Hamidah and her two children were on their way home to Kampung Tanjung Parang in Samarahan from the school where Hamidah was teaching, when the accident happened. - Bernama
