Malaysia clears first Thomas Cup hurdle

MACAU: Malaysia, led by World No 1 Lee Chong Wei, defeated Hong Kong 3-2 in their opening Group D tie of the Thomas Cup Asian Zone qualifying tournament in Macau.

The team showed their fragility in the singles department when the lost their points through Mohd Hafiz Hashim and Liew Daren.

Hafiz's losing streak against Hu Yun continued when he crashed 20-22, 18-21 while Daren's hope for a flying start in his debut went up in the smoke with a 21-17, 16-21, 19-21 defeat to Chan Yan Kit.

On Wednesday, the team will take on second seed South Korea and they will have to win in order to make the last eight as the group champion lost to Hu Yun 20-22,18-21; Lim Kim Wah-Goh V Shem bt Wong Wai Hong-Lee Chun Wei 21-14, 21-16; Liew Daren lost to Chan Yan Kit 21-17, 16-21, 19-21.
