PETALING JAYA: Actress Maya Karin is finally tying the knot with her beau Steven David Shorthose (pic) next month.

“Marriage should be easy and simple. Personally, it is no different to ‘going out or dating’. I do not want to perceive it as something heavy,” she said at the launch of her official website www.mayakarin.com yesterday.

“It should not be a burden or about each other’s responsibility. It should simply be about love and enjoying each other’s company and looking after one another,” she said.

The couple met seven years ago when Steven was tutoring Maya’s brother at Gardens International School.

Steven, 38, from Liverpool, England, who converted to Islam four years ago, is known by his Muslim name Muhammad Ali, after the famous boxer. He now teaches Maths at The Alice Smith School in Seri Kembangan.

Italian romance: Maya and her future groom have a chosen a small town in Italy for their wedding reception.

Asked about the wedding, Maya said it would be held in Italy.

“It is a very nice holiday villa in a small town called Bellagio. We both thought it was very beautiful and serene for a wedding,” said the 29-year-old who is currently working on a new album and movie titled Pisau Cukur.

Maya said they had also wanted to wed somewhere near Steven’s mother as she was ill.

“He is the only one here in Malaysia and his family (three sisters and mother) are all back in England, so we thought we might do it near them,” she added.

Maya’s close family members will be travelling to Italy for the receptions on Aug 9 and 14.

A special reception will be held here on Aug 29 for family and friends from the industry.

Only about 70 guests are invited.

Asked to describe Steven, Maya said she likes him because “he is really funny and understanding”.

“He makes me laugh and compromises with my work schedule plus he has waited for me for seven years!” she said cheekily.

Maya stressed that she would continue with her work even after marriage.

“I would probably cut down bit by bit but at the moment nothing changes,” she said.
