SIBU: Five people had a narrow escape as a container ship rammed into a garden pavilion in the Rejang River here.
Two of them were teenagers fishing at one of the two pavilions built by the Chiang Chuan Association as part of a RM1.5mil waterfront beautification project completed three years ago.
The landmark pavilions are connected by a bridge to the Tua Pek Kong temple on the riverbank.
The cargo ship lost control and crashed into the pavilion while trying to berth at the nearby Rejang Port Authority wharf Thursday afternoon.
The collision caused the collapse of the pavilion and partially damaged the bridge. It punched a big hole in the bow of the ship, which still managed to berth safely at the wharf after that.
State Assistant Minister for Public Health Datuk Dr Soon Choon Teck, Chiang Chuan Association chairman Chai Then Sien and Sibu Municipal Council secretary Wong Fu Toh were at the scene to find out what happened.
Chai said the association would ask an insurance firm to assess the damages so as to seek compensation from the ship owner.
