SUNGAI PETANI: Barely ten hours after she got married, the bride found herself a widow.
Harisun Hanafi, 23, was devastated when her husband Mohd Shazwan Abdullah, 33, was killed on the North-South Expressway at 2.50am yesterday while trying to help some accident victims.
Mohd Shazwan had stopped his car at Km100.8 of the highway, about 5km from here, to help Mohd Jabir, 26, his sister Azizah Meera Mydin, 25, and their maid Sicilia @ Vanesa Grant Francis, 24, from Segamat, Johor, out of their four-wheel-drive that had crashed into a lorry.
A container lorry crashed into them. Mohd Shazwan, Mohd Jabir and Sicilia died on the spot while Meera suffered serious injuries.
The container lorry then spun and rammed into a parked oil tanker, which in turn hit Shazwan’s car, injuring his father-in-law father Hanafi Lazim, 50, and brother-in-law Mohd Anuar, 23. Both were waiting for Shazwan outside the car.
Two onlookers – Mohd Aziran Salleh, 16, and Ramli Hassan, 20 – who had alighted from their car and were standing next to Shazwan's car, were also injured.
The first lorry driver, who was unhurt, has lodged a police report while the container lorry driver is believed to have fled on foot. Police are now looking for him.
A sobbing Harisun, when met at the Sungai Petani mortuary yesterday, said she and Mohd Shazwan had just gone through their akad nikah at 5pm on Sunday.
“I had a feeling something bad was going to happen to my husband and tried to stop him from going to Pahang,” she said.
“But my husband wanted to visit relatives there as that was his father’s wish. I begged him not to go but he refused to listen. Now that he is gone, I accept it as fate and Allah’s will.
“I also accept the fact that I am now a widow. I am glad that we had a brief moment of happiness during our akad nikah.”
Harisun said her husband converted to Islam five years ago. They met in 2002 and on Sunday, held their akad nikah at a mosque near Harisun’s house in Hutan Kampung, Jalan Langgar, Alor Star.
“We had planned to hold the bersanding ceremony at the end of this year,” she added.Mohd Shazwan was buried at the Derga Muslim Cemetery at 3.30pm yesterday.
