KUANTAN: Efforts are being carried out to ensure the historical mining town of Sungai Lembing does not become a ghost town.
The state government, in collaboration with the Museum and Antiquities Department, will develop Sungai Lembing as a historical site and ensure it is remembered as the largest tin mine in the mid-20th century.
State executive councillor for the women and tourism committee Datuk Maznah Mazlan said that under the Eighth Malaysia Plan, RM6.3mil was spent on refurbishing buildings which had historical value.
These included clubhouses, administration buildings, factories and tunnels.
Replying to Sohaimi Mohamed Shah (BN – Sungai Lembing) on efforts to develop Sungai Lembing as a tourist site, Maznah said proposals had been made to expand facilities such as chalets and to undertake landscape works in the former mining town.
Sohaimi suggested that old polo horses be sent to Sungai Lembing so that carriage rides could be offered to tourists wishing to visit the historical mining sites in the area.
