Sultanah of Kedah dies

ALOR STAR: The Sultanah of Kedah, Sultanah Bahiyah Tuanku Abdul Rahman, passed away Tuesday after a long illness.  

The Sultanah, who turned 73 on Sunday died at 12.23pm at Istana Kuala Chegar, within the grounds of Istana Anak Bukit. 

Sultanah Bahiyah was born on August 24, 1930 at Sri Menanti, Negeri Sembilan.  

She was the eldest child of Tuanku Abdul Rahman Almarhum Yamtuan Muhammad and Tunku Kurshiah Tunku Besar Tunku Burhanudin who were then the Yang DiPertuan Besar and Tuanku Ampuan of Negeri Sembilan. 

She married the Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, on March 3, 1956 at Sri Menanti Negeri Sembilan and was installed as Sultanah on Feb 20, 1959. 

Sultanah Bahiyah will be laid to rest at 2.30pm at the Royal Mausoleum in Langgar near here after zohor prayers Wednesday.  

The Kedah government has declared Wednesday a public holiday for the state.
