KUALA LUMPUR: Umno debaters can speak all they want at next week’s general assembly, but to get a resounding win at the general elections they have to do thorough work at the grassroots level, said Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz.

She said that while it was the movement’s priority to win the polls, there was no point in just talking about how terrific someone is.

“You can talk as much as you want and hammer your fist into the air 100 times, but if you don’t go to the grassroots and the voters’ level, it will all come to nothing,” she said, when asked about Wanita Umno’s preparations for the next general elections.

Rafidah had earlier chaired a Wanita Umno meeting on the resolutions to be tabled at the annual general assembly on June 18.

“If we fight among ourselves, don’t work hard enough and try to choose our own candidates without supporting the ones chosen by the leadership, we have to face the consequences if we lose,” she said.

She said losing Kelantan (in 1990) and Terengganu (in 1999) to PAS were bitter lessons for the Barisan Nasional and should not be forgotten.

“We should make thorough preparations as Wanita is the link to the electorate at the grassroots.

“Many can talk about winning the elections, but many cannot go from house to house to woo the votes,” she said, adding that Wanita would rope in Puteri Umno to help in going to the ground.
