KOTA BARU: Five people, including two children, were killed and three others seriously injured when the car they were in collided head-on with a lorry at Jalan Telong, Kampung Kandis, Bachok about 35km from here yesterday.

The dead were car driver Mat Hassan Mat Hussin, 58, his brother-in-law Mohd Nor Idris, 44, Mohd Nor’s wife Ramlah Ibrahim, 58, Azlin Mat Nor, six, and Fitri Jusoh, five.

Bachok OCPD Deputy Supt Suhaimi Abdul Rahim said Mat Hassan and Mohd Nor died on the spot while Ramlah died on the way to the Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital in Kubang Kerian.

“The two children died on the way to the Bachok Hospital,” he said.

DSP Suhaimi said three other passengers, Zainon Abdullah, 46, and couple Abdul Rahman Ismail, 25, and Mahani Mat Nor, 16, had been warded at the USM hospital with serious injuries.

He said the collision happened when the car was heading for Kandis from Bachok while the one-tonne lorry was travelling on the opposite direction.

“The lorry driver who was not injured had been detained for investigation,” he said.

DSP Suhaimi said firemen had to extricate the bodies of Hassan and Mohd Nor from the wreckage.

In Klang, a hardware shop owner was found murdered with several stab wounds on his back in his hardware shop in Jalan Stesen here yesterday.

Chua Cheng Guan, 59, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah hospital here.

OCPD Asst Comm A. Paramasivam said the deceased was rushed to the hospital by his younger brother who went to the shop after being informed of the incident by a member of the public.

He said Chua's younger brother also operated a hardware shop across the street.

ACP Paramasivam said police did not recover any weapon from the crime scene but found the deceased's wallet without any money in it.

He said they were investigating if robbery was the motive of the crime.
