PETALING JAYA: A company was fined RM60,000 on Saturday for not conducting an environmental impact assessment (EIA) on its resort project on the Pulau Perhentian Marine Park in Terengganu the highest penalty ever imposed for that offence in the state.
Terengganu Department of Environment (DOE) director Hassan Mat said the Sessions Court had in the past only slapped penalties ranging from RM10,000 to RM20,000 although Section 34 (A) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 provided for a maximum fine of RM100,000.
