Legends around the country

FROM the loyal guardian of Tasik Chini to the fierce, fire-breathing protector on Mount Kinabalu, dragons have always existed in our local legends.

Then we have the unique folktales and magical myths that have been passed down through generations in each state, reflecting the beliefs and traditions of the Malaysian people.

The diverse and enchanting folklore highlights the country’s rich cultural heritage and the timeless values they embody. Here are some examples:

Kedah

> Raja Bersiong: This cruel king who rules with an iron fist grows fangs after the palace cook cuts his finger and taints the king’s meal with his blood. The king’s bloodlust eventually leads to an uprising that causes his downfall.

> Mahsuri: A beautiful maiden from Langkawi, who is wrongly accused of adultery, with her dying breath puts a curse on the islanders, dooming seven generations of their descendants to great misfortune.

> Puteri Lindungan Bulan: A king hides his daughter in a magical shroud to protect the princess from being abducted by a neighbouring king whose proposal she rejected.

Melaka

> Hang Tuah: This legendary warrior epitomises loyalty and bravery with his adventures and battles in ancient Melaka.

Johor

> Legend of Gunung Ledang: A mysterious, beautiful princess, who lives on Gunung Ledang, sets impossible conditions when the Sultan of Melaka asks for her hand.

Pahang

> Seri Gumum Dragon: This mythical dragon is said to be the guardian of Tasik Chini, protecting it from harm.

Sarawak

> Puteri Santubong and Puteri Sejinjang: A tale of two rival celestial warrior princesses who fall in love with the same prince. They wage war over the prince, and their deadly battle leads to the formation of Gunung Santubong and Gunung Sejinjang.

Sabah

> Mount Kinabalu: There are various tales linked to the country’s tallest mountain – a popular one says the mountain was created by deities to become the centre of the world, while according to another, the peak is home to a magical jewel guarded by a clever dragon that outsmarts all the thieves who try to steal the valuable gem.
