IN a makeshift clinic amid Sudan’s war-ravaged capital, a determined young woman did what she could to save lives – fighters and civilians alike.

She had no formal medical training, yet when beat-up cars screeched to a halt outside, she rushed to treat the wounded, staunching gunshot wounds, changing dressings, and improvising blood tests using the flash from her mobile phone.
