Applications for the GREAT scholarship 2026 intake are now open for Malaysian students interested in pursuing postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom (UK).
Offered in partnership with the British Council, the scholarship provides £10,000 (approximately RM53,420) towards tuition fees for a one-year taught postgraduate programme at selected UK universities for the 2026–2027 academic year.
Among the participating institutions are Queen’s University Belfast, the University of St Andrews and the University of York.
On April 25, Star Media Group organised a webinar via Zoom to provide prospective applicants with more insights into the programme.
The session featured University of York international officer (South-East Asia) Manika Kamkaew, Queen’s University Belfast student recruitment manager Glenn Morton and University of St Andrews international officer in admissions Ashleigh Fraser.
During the hour-long session, the speakers shared insights into their programmes, admissions expectations and the support available to international students.
They also highlighted the value of studying in a diverse academic environment, noting that UK universities are home to students from a wide range of cultural and academic backgrounds.
“When you are looking for an international study opportunity, you want to be meeting different people from different backgrounds.
"It just makes the classroom more interesting to hear different perspectives and ideas,” Fraser said.
Agreeing, Kamkaew emphasised the long-term value of the university experience beyond graduation.
“After graduating from the University of York, students can continue to seek advice on business ventures, request references from their professors and stay connected through a strong alumni network. It is a lifelong support system,” she said.
Meanwhile, Morton outlined the advantages for law students studying at Queen’s University Belfast, particularly its proximity to key legal institutions.
He noted that Belfast is considered a legal hub, with numerous law firms located within close distance of the university.
“Students get to visit these law firms and network, which brings their studies to life. It's a bit more of an incentive.
"They can feel that what they’re learning is very relevant to the real world,” he pointed out.
Malaysian students applying for the scholarship must hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies them for entry into a postgraduate programme at a UK university, and must meet all admission requirements set by their chosen institution.
The application deadlines vary by university: May 11, 2026 for the University of York, May 30, 2026 for the University of St Andrews, and May 31, 2026 for Queen’s University Belfast.
