A NEWLY-INSTALLED rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system at Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak-anak Yatim/Miskin Dahikmah, Kampung Pintu Padang, Gopeng, will help the orphanage see substantial reductions in long-term operating costs and promote environmental awareness among its residents.

The 14.715 kWp PV system, featuring 27 solar panels, is a corporate social responsibility initiative by Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), in collaboration with Samaiden Group Berhad.

During the unveiling of the PV system on Aug 9, a series of activities, including a colouring contest and a talk on renewable energy by Samaiden Group Berhad assistant manager (Technical) Najihah Azafen, was conducted.

UTAR vice-president (Student Development and Alumni Relations) Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, in his speech, said the initiative, which aims to foster awareness of green technology among the younger generation, is aligned with the varsity’s commitment to environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles.

Samaiden Group Berhad project development director Mohd Makhzumi Ghazali said the clean energy generated by the solar panels is expected to avoid approximately 14 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, a positive environmental impact comparable to planting around 583 trees.

“In addition, the system is projected to achieve up to 88.94% savings on their average electricity bill, significantly reducing their operational costs,” he said.

The initiative stemmed from a memorandum of understanding (MoU) inked last year between UTAR and Samaiden to promote sustainable development and innovation through joint expertise in solar PV systems, engineering projects, curriculum co-development, industrial placements, staff and student mobility, research and consultancy, and skills training programmes.
