When people think of Scouts in Malaysia, most would picture Land Scouts in their familiar grey uniforms, trekking through forests and setting up campfires.
Few know that within the Scouting movement exists a dynamic wing – the Air Scouts – proudly wearing light blue uniforms, navy blue berets and the Malaysian National Scout scarf, their eyes not on the ground, but fixed on the skies.
Air Scouts are every bit Scouts – grounded in the same values and promise – but with a unique mission: to ignite and nurture a passion for aviation among youth.
In Malaysia, the Air Scout programme is part of the Persekutuan Pengakap Malaysia, offering a structured and progressive journey in aviation education.
Divided into Junior (lower secondary) and Senior (upper secondary) Air Scouts, members follow a pathway that includes aviation theory, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)-based projects, aircraft recognition, principles of flight, and leadership development.
The programme blends hands-on activities – such as model aircraft building, flight simulation, and airport or air traffic control visits – with classroom knowledge and real-world applications. It is a calling that marries discipline with discovery – building dreamers and future pioneers of the aerospace world.
My own Air Scouting journey began from childhood wonder. I was fascinated by flight. Aircraft models, aviation books, documentaries – I devoured them all. Every time I saw a pilot in uniform, I was filled with awe and admiration. I dreamt of one day flying myself.
Even though I could not become a pilot, my deepest desire never left me – to inspire and produce future pilots. I chose to channel this dream through the Air Scout programme, where I could plant the seeds of interest in young minds and walk with them as they grow.
As a full-time teacher, a husband and a father, and a person of faith, life is busy. But for these young people, I have never hesitated. For when one of them dons the wings and takes to the skies one day, I will be proud beyond measure – knowing that through Air Scouting, their dream took flight.
My efforts bore fruit when I was honoured as the first Certified Air Scout Leader in Sarawak – an award conferred by the National Air Scout Secretariat last year. It was a moment of deep fulfilment.
Throughout the past year, I have devoted myself to mentoring and encouraging my fellow Scout leaders in Sarawak who, like me, had attended the Kursus Kepimpinan Pengakap Udara (KPPU). On May 17, five of them received their Certified Air Scout Leader credentials.
Now, we are beginning to see the sky open wide for our young Air Scouts. To date, we have produced the first batch of 36 Junior Air Scouts in Sarawak, who have been recognised as Junior Leading Airmen and now wear their full wing insignia on their uniforms with pride.
Currently, we are guiding our first Junior Air Scout in pursuing the prestigious National Chief Commissioner’s Award, while 12 Senior Air Scouts are preparing for the National Chief Scout Award, which we aim to complete by next month.
Air Scouting in Sarawak is now a growing movement – driven by passion, shaped by education, and lifted by the dreams of the young. We are building more than Air Scouts; we are building leaders, engineers, aviators and visionaries.
We call upon schools, communities and public agencies to recognise and support this effort.
The sky is not the limit – it is the beginning. And with commitment, faith and unity, the Air Scouts of Sarawak are ready to soar.
