I WAS six when I began school at Bidor Chung Hua Primary in Perak. There was neither a kindergarten nor a daycare centre in my town then.
It was therefore in Year One that I started learning to read and write Chinese characters. There were also arithmetic classes where number operations were taught which I found interesting and fun. Then, from Year Three onwards, I learnt the English alphabet and the Malay phonetics.
