‘A-Level’ up

EXCELLENT teachers bring top-notch results not only for their students, but also the institutions they serve.

And this can be seen at HELP Academy where 56 of its A-Level graduates were recently honoured with the Pearson Excellence Awards.

Coupled with this was its honour of being the institution with the most number of students in the Asia-Pacific region who scooped the awards for the class of 2021.

To qualify for the awards, A-Level students must complete a minimum of three subjects at Grade A and above.

The 56 recipients, who were among 258 students awarded the recognition, were feted at a tea party held at the academy to celebrate their success.

Lim Rui Wen, who is studying biological sciences at Imperial College London in the United Kingdom, attributed her success of scoring A*s for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics to her lecturers at the academy.

“They were very supportive of me. Whenever I asked questions, they were always willing to help me.

“They gave notes, past year questions, and just did a lot of the work for me, so I didn’t really have to do anything extra because they had given me everything I needed to achieve my A*s,” she said in a press release on June 10.

Fong Yong Bing, who scored straight A*s for Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, and is studying actuarial science at the London School of Economics (LSE), said the lecturers’ feedback assisted him when he encountered challenging questions.

“The lecturers were all highly experienced.

“In addition, we were able to participate in the Getting the Edge programmes every week, which helped to build teamwork and leadership skills among the students,” he said.

Among the award recipients was former A-Levels Student Council president Sharlene Chin Hui Wen (pic), who scored 3A*s and 1A and is studying data science at LSE, where she has been elected the Data Science Society president.

HELP Academy chief executive officer Prof Datuk Zakariah Ahmad said HELP’s A-Level students have won many awards over the years.

“The A-Levels Department is well-known for its excellent teaching and results; their achievements are well deserved,” he said.

The institution said many of its teaching staff in the department have over 20 years of teaching experience with the A-Level syllabus.

“Students select HELP’s A-Levels based on the strong reputation of its teaching staff.

“The students want to do well, so half the battle is already won,” said lecturer Kanagambigai Manickavasagar, who has been teaching Chemistry for 22 years.

Her colleague Aw Seng Hong, who has been teaching Further Mathematics for 30 years, said she takes her job very seriously.

“My students’ successes reflect my ability as a teacher.

“That’s why I do my best each time,” she said.

The A-Levels Department has recently moved to its new premises in Wisma HELP with upgraded facilities, and its new science labs are expected to be completed within the next few months.

It is currently accepting students for the July and September 2022 intakes.
