LEARNING loss as a result of school closures during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic is a concern that warrants attention and action. According to a World Bank report released in June last year, there could be a global loss of up to 0.9 years of schooling adjusted for quality after seven months of school closures due to the pandemic. Even as schools have begun to reopen all around the world, such learning loss continues to accumulate, says Rakan Tutor, a local non-profit organisation fighting educational inequality by offering free one-to-one tutoring.
Citing the 2005 Hurricane Katrina in the United States as an example, it said students fell behind in their learning by two years, having missed just six to 12 months of schooling.
