THE Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the construction industry in Malaysia, with some projects being delayed, suspended, or even cancelled.
According to Finance Ministry in its recent Economic Outlook 2021 report, the construction sector is expected to contract the most at 18.7% compared to other supply-side sectors but is anticipated to rebound by 13.9% in 2021 due to the revival of major infrastructure projects, along with affordable housing projects.
As we move towards the post-pandemic economic recovery, the construction sector is being called upon to adopt innovative technology such as industrialised building systems, mechanisation, and automation to ensure that buildings are sustainably built, environmentally friendly, and safe for communities.
The move towards technology adoption will require the construction industry to employ high-skilled talent who are equipped with the right abilities accompanied by the capacity to navigate the intricacies for the future of work.
Heriot-Watt University’s associate head of School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS) Prof Satesh Narayana concurs: “I personally feel that being in a nation that has a huge potential for growth and development, from the perspective of the built-environment, we have hit a speed bump – a bump caused by the pandemic.
“As soon as society normalises, one of the first industries to hit high gear will be the built environment, as development and progress need to continue.
“Therefore, in two to three years anyone with a building-related degree will be highly sought after as we continue our journey towards achieving the status of a fully developed country.”
