Accountancy remains a strong and resilient career choice

PETALING JAYA - You may have heard of the usual reasons to choose a career in accountancy, which include good salaries and the fact it is a respectable profession.

While stereotyping has labelled accountancy as a boring profession populated by number crunchers and mathematics nerds, it is in reality an increasingly sophisticated occupation. The modern era of accounting goes beyond bookkeeping to investigate businesses and disclosures of financial affairs.

Nowadays, accountants are regarded as the financial eyes and ears for business organisations. They provide financial information needed to aid the decision-making process.

It is undeniable that the role of accountants in the workforce is an essential one. Apart from helping a business track income and expenditures, it also ensures statutory compliance and provides management and stakeholders with financial information used to make more informed business decisions.

In fact, accountants are among the top five money-earners Malaysia alongside lawyers, doctors, engineers, and surveyors.

For students, where would they go if they wish to pursue accountancy as their career path? The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) offers one of the better options.

To qualify as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant, you must complete the Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) programme, a highly respected professional qualification that requires students to complete at least three years on-the-job training while passing a series of exams.

For many Malaysian students after high school, they start by completing ICAEW's Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business, which is made up of the first six modules of the ACA, before going on to complete the rest of the qualification.

Founded in 1880, ICAEW has a long history of serving the public interest and it continues to work with governments, regulators, and business leaders around the world.

Promoting inclusivity, diversity, and fairness, ICAEW attract talented individuals into the profession and give them the skills and values they need to build resilient businesses, economies, and societies, while ensuring our planet’s resources are managed sustainably.

ICAEW is a part of Chartered Accountants Worldwide, a global network of 750,000 members across 190 countries, which promotes the expertise and skills of chartered accountants on a global basis.

More information on ICAEW and its courses is obtainable from its representatives during the Star Virtual Education Fair at bit.ly/starvirtualedu.
