Prof Asma is new MQA chairman

PROF Datuk Dr Asma Ismail (pic) has been appointed Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) chairman effective this month.

She takes over from Emeritus Prof Tan Sri Dr Abu Hassan Othman who finished his term last month.

MQA in a statement, thanked Prof Abu Hassan for his service.

Prof Asma who is currently Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) vice-chancellor, was previously first female vice-chancellor of Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, first female deputy vice-chancellor at USM as well as the first female higher education director-general.

She is also the first female president of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia.

She pursued her degree in biology in the University of Nevada, Reno, in the United States, Master’s in microbiology from Indiana University in Bloomington and her PhD in the field of Cellular and Molecular Biology from the same university.
