MY STORY: THE TRENCHES
BY JIM ELDRIDGE
THIS is the story of Billy Stevens who joined the army in 1917, with his childhood friend Rob Matthews, to fight in World War I(1914-1918).
Billy shares his experience of the fighting of his country. He had a frightening experience when he was nearly killed after breathing in mustard gas. His disappointment was seeing his best friend, Rob, shot by a firing squad for being a coward.
He also talks about the peace that was present on Dec 25, 1917, when both the Germans and the British soldiers came out of the trenches and met in No Man’s Land. There they shook hands and wished one another Happy Christmas.
I like this story as it gave me an understanding of one man’s fight in the First World War. I also agree with Billy’s father’s statement: “Politics is to be blamed for most of the troubles in the world.”
The war finally ended on Nov 11, 1918.
