SIX surau in Penang have been awarded five-star ratings.
They are at Aeon Mall Bukit Mertajam, Pen-Mutiara Restaurant in Batu Maung, Original Kayu Nasi Kandar in Bukit Jambul, Hotel Tabung Haji in Bayan Lepas, Sunway Hotel Seberang Jaya and Hospital Seberang Jaya.
Penang Religious Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Malik Abul Kassim said they were among 136 surau audited.
“We considered their overall condition and basic facilities,” he said during the state-level Maal Hijrah assembly at Dewan Sri Pinang on Saturday.
Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas presented the Tokoh Maal Hijrah award to former Penang mufti Datuk Seri Hassan Ahmad.
The Anugerah Usahawan Islam 2014 went to Habib Jewels founder Datuk Habib Mohamed Abdul Latif while Ibrahim @ Othman Ismail and Siti Eishah Mat Tait won the Bapa Mithali and Ibu Mithali awards respectively.
Kamarudin Abdullah was given the Anugerah Pendakwah Negeri while Muhammad Nur Azlee Stanley Abdullah received the Anugerah Saudara Kita.
Penang Malay Association president Tan Sri Mohd Yussof Latiff presented awards to six individuals for contributions to society.
They were Datuk Haja Najmudeen Kader, Abdul Hamid Abu Hassan and Sharifah Maznah Syed Mohamed who got the Tokoh Kemasyarakatan for community work and Penang Education Department deputy director Dr Hajjah Sharifah Bee Aboo Bakar (Tokoh Pendidikan) for education.
Datuk Bazir Ahmad Nazir Ahmad received the Tokoh Seni Budaya for arts and culture and Abdul Wahab Mohamed (Tokoh Sukan) for sports.
