STUDENTS from SMK Convent Datuk Keramat’s Road Safety Club emerged first place in a competition to promote road safety in Penang schools.
School principal Chia Lay Lay said she was proud of her students for their success in the secondary school category of the contest.
“We put up a big notice board in the school with vital road safety information for the students.
“Many of them became aware of the rules and the importance of being a responsible road user,” she said.
On behalf of the students, she was presented with RM700, a trophy and a certificate at the award ceremony at the school hall in George Town recently.
In second place was Chung Ling High School which received RM600.
In the primary school category, SJK (C) Union emerged the winner and received RM700.
Its headmistress Loh Yat Cheng said the programme served as a good platform for the pupils to learn and practise good values on the road.
SK Padang Menora came in second and won RM600.
In third place was SK Machang Bubok II which received RM500.
Two other consolation prizes of RM200 were given out to SK Jawi and SK Perempuan Methodist.
The competition was orga-nised by the Penang Road Safety Council in collaboration with the Penang Road Safety Department (JKJR) and Penang Education Department.
State JKJR director Muhamad Husni Mahmud said the campaign began in 2009 and the competition was the first of its kind.
State Education Department human resources development sector chief Izmi Ismail urged drivers to respect the law and be ethical while on the road.
“Drivers should be patient. Many accidents occur when dri-vers are rude and drive aggressively on the road.
“With positive driving attitudes, we can decrease the accident rate,” he said.
Students and guests who filled the hall were also entertained by a traditional Chinese traditional dance.
This was followed by a video montage of the participating schools.
