Monitor lizard attacks eight-month-old infant

ROMPIN: In one of the most uncommon reptile attack, an adult monitor lizard had injured an eight-month-old girl, causing serious injuries to her face and head.

The lizard was also said to have sunk its teeth into the head of the infant and tried to drag her out of the house into the bushes nearby.

However, the girl’s loud and incessant cries attracted the attention of her mother Nor Raudah Abdullah, 38, who rushed to her aid.

Rompin OCPD Deputy Supt Johari Jahaya said the bizzare incident occurred at the staff quarters of a popular holiday resort in Tioman Island early on Monday.

DSP Johari said the housewife had left Nur Hidayah Abdul Rahman in the kitchen area to attend to something in the living room when she heard her loud cries.

“When she rushed back to check on her, she was shocked to see the monitor lizard with its sharp claws imbedded in her daughter’s head and trying to drag her out.

“She quickly hit the lizard, forcing it to release its grip before chasing it away into the bushes,” he said, adding that Nur Hidayah was bleeding due to the bite marks.

DSP Johari said the infant’s mother quickly sought assistance from nearby villagers to send her daughter to the health clinic in Kampung Tekek for prompt treatment.

The infant’s father Abdul Rahman Ismail, 38, was informed later and decided to lodge a police report at the Tioman police station over the incident.

“The baby girl is now out of danger and in a stable condition.

“She has been transferred to the Hospital Sultanah Aminah in Johor Baru from the Mersing Hospital for further observation,” he said.
