Kanna Curry House selected 'Best Banana Leaf restaurant in Klang Valley'

A BANANA leaf meal is truly a satisfying dining experience that has won the hearts of Malaysians from all walks of life.

One particular restaurant that has wooed diners for its sumptuous offering on a banana leaf is none other than Kanna Curry House in Section 17, Petaling Jaya.

The restaurant which has served up likeable South Indian cuisine for close to three decades now, has clinched the title as The Star People’s Food Awards - Best Banana Leaf restaurant in the Klang Valley.

Much like the humble nature of its cuisine, the 34-year-old eatery started off from humble beginnings.

Its manager, Muthu Kumar Kannan, related how his grandfather, Usilappan from Karaikudi, South India, came to Malaysia with a dream to open a curry house, which he lovingly named after his son, Kannan.

Importing nearly 80% of their spices and ingredients from India, every dish in Kanna was prepared with careful attention supervised by Kannan and their loyal chefs in order to offer the authentic taste of their motherland.

Today, the successful Section 17 eatery is managed by Usilappan’s 26-year-old grandson, Muthu, who learnt the ropes of the family business since the age of 13.

“I used to follow my father around the restaurant and helped out as much I could.

“I really enjoyed it and that is how I learnt to run the business,” he said.

When asked what distinguishes them from the dozens of banana leaf restaurants, Muthu pointed to the variety of vegetable dishes and their famous fried chicken.

“We pressure-fry our fried chicken to make sure they are soft on the inside and crispy on the outside,” he said, adding that they used only farm-grown chicken.

The restaurant received 1,063 votes, beating nine other banana leaf nominees in the top 10 to win the award via public nomination and voting on Metro Online Broadcast’s (MOB) website (www.mob.com.my).

The Star People’s Food Awards is a monthly contest that recognises the best street food in the Klang Valley.

Every month until May next year, the public can vote for the best category-based street food such as asam laksa (October) or nasi lemak (November) via mob.com.my

Nominations are from Sept 1 to 10 and voting starts on Sept 15, ending at midnight on Sept 30.
