THE downpour yesterday afternoon flooded Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam, causing massive traffic congestion in the residential area.

The waters rose half a metre high following the two-hour heavy rain that began at 1pm.

There was a traffic backlog from the major entry and exit points including at the Kesas highway as well as Persiaran Budiman, Shah Alam.

The flood waters were concentrated at the industrial areas along Jalan 25/41, as well as several roads leading to the housing estates including Jalan 25/44, Jalan 25/67, Jalan 25/36, Jalan 25/43 and Jalan 25/41.

Taman Sri Muda Zone A Rukun Tetangga chairman T. Mogan said about 600 houses were flooded.

“We were also told that several accidents occured due to the congestion.

“If the rain continues, Sri Muda will be in a bad shape,” said Mogan.

He said the waters were yet to recede at press time.

Taman Sri Muda, he said, had long experienced flood woes but nothing had been done about it thus far.

He said everytime it rained, residents would scramble to prepare for rising waters.

“All these problems should have been addressed years ago, but nothing has been done,” he added.

Mogan said he was unsure of the actual cause for the flooding but believed it was due to drains that were not big enough to cope with the sudden increase in water.

He urged the local authorities and the elected representatives to give the matter due attention before a major catastrophe hit the area.
