Tinsmith's dying trade

By YU JI

KUCHING: Earlier this week tinsmith Choo Wei Yueh, 73, received an order to hand-make oil lamps. It surprised him.

“People don’t use oil lamps anymore. When they do, it’s for decoration, not for lighting up. When they want an oil lamp, they will buy ready made ones, not order from people like me,” Choo said yesterday, sitting behind half a dozen teacup size lamps he had just made.
