KUCHING: Former Sarawak chief minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud has been sworn in as the seventh Yang di-Pertua Negeri(TYT).
A ceremonial parade was held at the State Legislative Assembly ground to welcome Taib who arrived in formal regalia with his wife, Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib, at 10.10am yesterday.
He was met by Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem and wife Puan Sri Jamilah Anu as well as State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar and wife Datin Amar Fatimah Mohd Iskandar.
The state anthem Ibu Pertiwiku was played, after which Taib inspected the guard of honour mounted by 105 officers and men of the Royal Malaysia Police under the command of DSP Merebun Manju.
He was then given a royal salute and the parade ended with the playing of Negaraku and the state anthem once again.
The oath taking ceremony followed at Dewan Lapau of the State Assembly.
It started with Adenan reading out the instrument of appointment which Taib received from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah at Istana Negara on Friday.
Taib, 78, then took his oath of office and signed the proclamation letter witnessed by Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Richard Malanjum and Adenan.
Taib succeeds Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhamad Salahuddin, whose term ended on Friday.
Born on May 21, 1936, Taib was the youngest person ever to be appointed a state minister in the history of Sarawak at the age of 27.
This marked his long career in politics, which culminated into him being Chief Minister for 33 years.
The state strongman, who is a law graduate from the University of Adelaide, was in the Federal Cabinet for 13 years, serving in various ministries before becoming Sarawak’s fourth chief minister in March 1981.
Taib is credited with bringing progress to Sarawak through his “politics of development” during his 33 years at the helm.
His latest success is the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy, or SCORE.
Meanwhile, state ministers and assistant ministers are scheduled to retake their oath before the new TYT at the Assembly tomorrow.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak congratulated Taib on his appointment.
“Congratulations to Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud on his appointment as the Governor of Sarawak,” he tweeted yesterday.
