TAN Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud cut a relaxed figure as he prepared to give what was probably the most momentous press conference of his long career.

Entering the room at the Astana where hordes of journalists were assembled, he was completely at ease and joked about the number of recorders on the table in front of him.
