Watch sparks fly

A BIGGER show is expected at the Putrajaya International Fireworks Competition 2013, thanks to the participation of pyrotechnics pro Blastmaster (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

In addition, participants from China, France, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United States are expected to put up a spectacular display.

The event will highlight state-of-the-art choreography with the longest blazing fireworks display from a floating 400m long barge in the centre of the Maritime Putrajaya lake.

The fireworks can be watched from Persiaran Tasik, Seri Saujana Bridge, Seri Gemilang Bridge, Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) and the Putrajaya Water Sports Complex.

Blastmaster executive director Ravindran Sunnie said the lake was chosen because of its strategic location.

“Visitors to Putrajaya will have ample space to watch the fireworks, even from a distance,” he said.

The Blastmaster team took six months to prepare the choreography, which includes music synchronisation.

“It is a very precise job as certain pyrotechnics must accompany particular beats in a song,” said Ravindran.

The team from Malaysia showcased their fireworks on Aug 30.

StarMetro visited the site earlier and saw that in addition to the 400m-long barge across the lake, there were three smaller barges set up behind it.

Ravindran said the long barge was for low and medium volume calibres, while the smaller ones were for high volume calibres.

“We have separated the lower and higher volumes because each has a different effect. That way, when the calibres are shot, they will create a spectacular design in the sky,” he said.

Having the fireworks on the lake is an advantage, he said, as the show will be reflected on the water’s surface like a mirror image.

The Putrajaya International Fireworks Competition 2013 crew are setting up the pyrotechnics for the first show on Aug 30 during a StarMetro visit on Aug 28.

More than 8,000 pyrotechnics will be used at each fireworks show ( last Friday and Saturday, on Sept 13, 14 and 15, and Oct 2) and spectators will be dazzled by more than 6,000 effects.

“Some of the effects visitors will see are gold twinkling waterfalls and glittering stars to a height of 15ft,” said Ravindran.

He hopes for clear weather as a rainy night will put a damper on things.

“Although the pyrotechnics are waterproof, spectators will not be able to enjoy the show as much if it rains,” he said.

For a unique experience, visitors can book a Lake Cruise package to enjoy the fireworks or park themselves at the PICC.

Apart from the fireworks, a mini concert by Korea Beat and China Concert as well as a DJ Competition will be held along with a bazaar and a carnival selling street food.

For spectators’ comfort, a number of parking lots have been designated near the venue and a shuttle bus services will be provided.

Visitors can also take the ERL to Putrajaya Sentral and then board a shuttle bus to the show.
