GLENEAGLES Penang’s patient load has increased by 20% to 30% since the 19-storey new wing opened for business last month.

Its chief executive officer Ronald Koh (pic) said the monthly occupancy rate was about 80% for the new wing, equipped with 270 beds.

“We will gradually increase the beds to 400 when fully operational,” he said.

Koh added that the old wing with 85 beds was currently being renovated.

“The refurbishment work for the old wing is scheduled for completion in 2014.

“We are carrying out the renovation exercise floor by floor,” he said.

The accident and emergency area and the haemotology, oncology, and transplant centre in the old wing would be extended, Koh added.

He said about RM180mil had been spent for the new wing and the equipment installed.

“The highlight of the new wing is the 10 operation theatres, of which two are digital ones, which can be remotely controlled and linked to the auditorium to provide live surgery lessons during training,” he added.

“We have also added new centres of excellence that include dermatology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, breast care, and radiotherapy.

“An additional 40 consultation suites have also been added to the new wing,” he said.

To better service the growing number of international and medical tourists, Koh said the new building was also home to a brand new international patient lounge, which would cater a variety of services including accommodation in Penang to tailor made health screening packages.

“As an entity under Parkway Pantai Limited, a subsidiary of IHH Healthcare Berhad, the hospital hopes to be a part of the referral centres for patients from Europe and the Middle East.

“Patients and visitors will also be pleased to know parking will no longer be an issue with the addition of over 500 parking lots,” he added.

Known as Asia’s largest hospital operator, IHH presently operates over 4,900 licensed beds in 30 hospitals as well as clinics and ancillary healthcare business across Singapore, Malaysia and Turkey, and key markets of the China, Hong Kong and India.

IHH is also present in Vietnam, Brunei and Macedonia.
