METROJAYA department store has opened at CityONE Megamall in Kuching, Sarawak’s largest shopping complex that will eventually have one million sq ft of retail space.
Construction is still ongoing but the mall’s management opened its doors for the public for the first time yesterday.
At 10am, lion dancers and the sound of firecrackers led the opening of Metrojaya. The department store’s first outlet in Sarawak is 130,000 sq ft.
Metrojaya is one of only three other outlets presently open for business at the mall, alongside Supreme Optical, Focal Point and Lazo Diamond. Reject Shop has temporarily opened outside the department store’s front entrance.
The other anchor tenants of CityONE — Queen’s and Golden Screen Cinema (GSC) — will open in the first quarter of next year, according to a CityONE MC Sdn Bhd spokesman.
Stating that the company was unable to provide more specific figures, she also declined to reveal the amount of retail space that had tenants.
A media statement from the management yesterday said Metrojaya’s in-house fashion labels would include East India Company, Somerset Bay, Passages, Zona, Emanuelle, Cape Cod and Laura Ashley. It also said GSC at CityONE would be the biggest cineplex built in Borneo.
“There will be 10 halls and a seating capacity of 1,800 seats, occupying 34,470 sq ft.
“It will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, a cosy ambience, ergonomically designed chairs and ample legroom.
“GSC promises to offer the best cinema experience to movie-goers in Kuching and one can expect a better selection of movies in 35mm, 2D and Digital 3D formats,” the statement added.
GSC presently has 23 cinemas in Malaysia, and will also open another cinema in Miri early next year at Bintang Megamall.
CityONE, when completed, will be spread across four-and-a-half floors. It has space for 600 retail units, three anchor tenants and seven mini anchor tenants.
“With a total retail investment of more than RM400mil, CityONE will be one of the largest malls in Sarawak and Sabah,” the statement said.
There are more than 1,500 parking bays at the shopping mall, and these will soon be made available, according to the statement.
“The design was inspired by the Beijing Olympic Stadium, with the crisscross facade costing RM6.5mil to build,” it added.
Other shops and service providers making their first foray in Sarawak at the mall include Celebrity Fitness, Baskin Robbins and Optimo.
The mall will also have branches of SenQ, The Body Shop, Chatime, Station One Cafe and GNC Livewell.
CityONE is located at the junction of Jalan Tun Jugah and Jalan Song.
It is one of several new mall developments in Kuching city. Others include Boulevard Shopping Complex and Plaza Merdeka, launched earlier this month.
Newer malls in the city centre, like a mall and condo development behind the Spring shopping mall, have just began construction, while the Summer mall at Kota Samarahan will open next year.
