Two men deny having firearms


GEORGE TOWN: Two men pleaded not guilty in a Sessions Court here to five charges involving illegal possession of two pistols and 29 rounds of ammunition.

Lim Soon Hean, 38, and Goh Cheng Huat, 58, are alleged to have committed the offences on the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway at 11.40pm on Sept 28.

The two are jointly charged with possessing 16 rounds of ammunition in a taxi.

Lim, a taxi driver, also faces two charges of having a Browning Patent Depose and five 9mm bullets, while Goh, a hawker, also has two charges of having a Beretta automatic and eight 9mm bullets.

Possession of ammunition under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960 carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine of up to RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.

Gun possession under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 carries a maximum 14-year jail term and whipping. Offences under the Act are non-bailable.

Lim and Goh were represented by Datuk K. Kumaraendran and Dev Kumaraendran while DPP Mohd Firdaus Abu Hanipah prosecuted.

Judge Sitarun Nisa Abdul Aziz fixed Dec 7 for mention pending the DNA and ballistics reports.
