REDTONE is further strengthening its presence in East Malaysia by extending its broadband WiMAX service coverage in Sarawak with the launch of its Miri coverage yesterday.

The service, however, would initially cover only the well-populated areas of Tanjung, Miri Waterfront Commercial Centre, Piasau, Lutong and Senadin.

“REDtone WiMAX is still new to people in Miri. So we spotted a few important places in Miri to see the demand. Based on the demand we will expand the coverage to more places,” said REDtone Telecommunication Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Lau Bik Soon at the launch yesterday.

He said REDtone had a stable service and numerous attractive packages to cater to both home and offices users.

REDtone’s broadband WiMAX service is currently already available in many of the well-populated areas in Kuching.

Pujut assemblyman Andy Chia, who officiated at the launch, said that REDtone’s service in Miri and Sarawak had contributed to the government’s aim to increase broadband penetration rate in the country.

He noted that so far the broadband penetration was only 12.5% and the government hoped to increase it to 50%.
