THE Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS) and the Selangor Cycling Association (SCA) joint development programme has been successful.
According to coach Mohd Yazif Jamaludin, the cyclists, all students of SMK Seksyen 11, Selangor’s sports school, had shown tremendous progress in the last 12 months.
“The cyclists have been winning medals in age group competitions. Most of the cyclists in the programme are below 16.
“Looking at their progress, they should be getting national call-ups soon.’’ said Yazif after a training session at the Kuala Lumpur Velodrome recently.
Thirteen cyclists are part of the development programme initiated by the MSNS, SCA and Selangor Education Department in June 2008.
Yazif, who had represented Malaysia in the Asian Cycling championships in 2002 and 2003, said the cyclists were in the final lap of preparations for the third leg of the National Back cycling circuit at the Kuala Lumpur Velodrome this weekend.
“This championship will be an opportunity for us to evaluate the cyclists. We are confident they will be able to make an impact as they have been impressive in training as well as recent competitions,’’ said Yazif.
Almost all the trainees had been on the podium in the previous two legs of the circuit.
But Yafiz singled out Nurfarah Ain Amran, Nursyahmira Anis Saidi Ahmad, Muhammad Faiz Izzuddin Omar Nur Syakila Hamzah and Abdul Azim Abdul Latiff.
“They had won individual medals and are certain to be selected to represent Selangor in the 2010 Sukma,’’ added Yafiz.
Nurfarah, who is only 16, was the gold medallist in the girls’ 1km individual time trial while Nursyahmira won the bronze in the same event. The 16-year-old Muhammad Faiz won a silver medal in the 1km Individual Time trial.
The trainees had to undergo a regimental schedule. On weekdays, the cyclists are at the velodrome for a two-hour daily training session. Three days a week, they have to attend gym sessions. On weekends, trainees will be heading to Fraser’s Hill, Ulu Yam, Kuala Selangor, Morib or Genting for long-riding sessions. The training sessions have been doubled because of the school holidays.
Besides local age group competitions, the some of the cyclists had the opportunity to gauge their progress in the Sport Excel road and track circuit, National championships and a competition in Indonesia.
So, Yazif said there was no reason for the trainees not to give a good account this weekend.
