SANDAKAN: Former Sabah State Assembly speaker Datuk Hassan Alban Sandukong has joined a campaign against the construction of a controversial coal-fired plant in this Sabah east coast district.
Hassan was named as a committee member in the newly-set-up Sandakan Anti Coal Power Action Committee headed by the district’s Chinese Chamber of Commerce chairman Stephen Wong Tien Fatt.
“I would like to point out that the reasons for objecting to the coal power plant in Sandakan are environmental and public-health concerns,” Wong said after announcing the committee’s formation recently.
Wong reiterated that the committee’s stand was nothing personal and they were not against development of Sandakan or government’s policies.
The thers in the committee are Environment Action Committee Sandakan chairman Eleanor Wong, Abang Mohd. Jorgy Haji Juana, G. Gengadharan Pillai (deputy chairman), Cham Yock Chua, Charles Chow Kok Cheng (secretaries), Dusun Chong (treasurer), Wong Vui Soon (media director), Ku Ah Kong (coordinator) and 20 committee members.
