BUTTERWORTH:Penang Customs foiled an attempt to smuggle in unlabelled sweaters worth RM294,000 from Hong Kong.
Customs deputy director-general (prevention) Datuk Mardina Alwi said the cigarettes were intercepted from a three-tonne lorry near the Gopeng North-South Expressway toll at Jalan Ipoh-Kampar on Tuesday at 9am.
“The cigarettes’ undeclared duty totalled RM547,747.20,” she said, adding that a tonto “rescued” the driver of the lorry.
Speaking at a news conference at Wisma Kastam here yesterday, Mardina said investigations found that the lorry contained 104,000 packets of kretek produced by a neighbouring country.
“We are questioning the lorry’s owner for leads,” she said.
On another matter, Mardina said between January and June 10, the Perak Customs Department solved 200 cases, an increase from 137 cases during the same period in 2007.
Among the items seized were cigarettes, liquor, fireworks and vehicles, she said.
“The total value of the seized items is over RM4mil involving some RM9mil in taxes,” she said.
She also welcomed information from the public which could lead to the arrest of smugglers.
“We pay for information which lead to successful prosecution,” she added.
