SANDAKAN: A group of parents and community leaders in this Sabah east coast district are incensed over a decision to use part of a field to erect two new pre-school blocks at the SK Karamunting primary school.
They want the school field to remain and the new building to be constructed at a more suitable site elsewhere within the school compound.
I do not agree with the move to build the structure at the school field which is being used for sports and other co-curriculum activities, Sekong State Assem-blyman Samsudin Yahya said when commenting on the protest from the SK Karamunting PTA.
Samsudin opined that before any decision was made on the project, the relevant authorities should first take into consideration the location and the views of the local community particularly the PTA.
Batu Sapi Wanita Umno chief Jamayah Sapawi wants the construction of the two blocks to be halted immediately.
The new structure should be erected at the original site which has been agreed upon by all quarters without disturbing the school field, she said.
Meanwhile Karamunting People Development Leader Lawrence Tan said his office had received a copy of the protest letter from the SK Karamunting PTA.
Tan who visited the school on Wednesday, expressed regret that construction work was still continuing despite the outcry from the PTA and local community.
The relevant authorities should also get the involvement of the local leaders and PTA in the decision-making process, said Tan.
Tan said his office would seek further explanation from the Sandakan Education Department because they also disagreed with the move to erect the new building at the school field.
The new pre-school building was supposed to be constructed on a site located behind one of the existing school structures and the protest started ever since the proposal to move the project to the school field was brought up.
SK Karamunting was built in 1963. It has five blocks of semi- concrete structures to accommodate 1,508 students and 73 teachers.
