Helping couples conceive

Best gift: Tunku Azizah with two babies conceived through IVF.

SINCE Tunku Azizah Fertility Foundation (TAFF) was formed three years ago, it has provided financial aid to needy Malaysian couples enabling them to seek medical treatment especially in reproduction.

More than RM2.3mil has been raised at dinners and through the sale of Cookbook on Traditional Cooking of Pahang, which was launched with the formation of TAFF.

“I managed to sponsor 100 couples for IVF, selected from about 350 fully completed application forms although the forms given out exceeded 1,000,’’ said Tengku Puan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah Sultan Iskandar.

She said she achieved more than what she ever dreamed of when she started the foundation after personally going through countless unsuccessful treatment for nine and a half years.

“In 2004 when I completed my cookbook, I thought it was the most fitting opportunity to launch TAFF and the book concurrently, with the book-sale proceeds totally pledged to run TAFF,’’ she said.

There are 12 TAFF children from 10 births and 10 more couples are starting a family.

Tunku Azizah said IVF treatment is expensive and RM1mil is needed to sponsor 50 couples yearly.

A committee comprising a group of women aged 50 and above, calling themselves the Golden Girls, is hoping to raise the much needed fund from the Timeless Elegance Charity Gala dinner on March 3 to assist more childless couples.

“There is more to life after 50 and we should not just let the golden years slip by. A lot of us still look good at this age and it is my job to help them look their best,’’ said A Cut Above founder and the dinner organising chairman Winnie Loo.

The joint organising chairman Melvin Lam has specially created an evening gown for each of these ladies and will also be contributing two gowns under the Melvin Lam Couture label for auction during the dinner.

In addition RM200,000 worth of cash vouchers from Melvin Lam Haute Couture will be given to guests.

The master developer of Cyberjaya Setia Haruman Sdn Bhd (SHSB) is sponsoring the dinner.

“We hope the funds raised during the forthcoming dinner will benefit more childless couples and spur caring Malaysians to contribute generously to TAFF,’’ said SHSB chief operating officer CK Lao.

TMC Fertility Centre (TMCFC) managing director Dr Colin Lee said TMCFC has been a strong supporter of TAFF’s activities and shares its vision of assisting couples that cannot afford IVF.

The dinner will be held at the Cindai Ballroom, Cyberview Lodge Resort and Spa, Cyberjaya.

Tables are priced at RM3,000; RM5,000 and RM8,000 for 10 people each.
