ANTIQUES and collectibles will be sold at Khoo Kongsi at Cannon Square in Penang tomorrow in conjunction with Carnival Malay-sia Mega Sale Arts and Explosion Fair 2006.
Pempena Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Kee Phaik Cheen said the compound of the historic Khoo Kongsi temple would be lively with a variety of activities including cultural performances.
The fair will be held from 2pm to midnight. There will be 20 hawker stalls and 16 craft stalls.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon will open the fair at 9.15pm.
Kee said the Khoo Kongsi was chosen as the venue for the fair because of its heritage ambience.
“This event is in line with efforts to make Malaysia a shopping destination,’’ she said.
Kee said the bulk of the tourism earnings came from hotel stays and shopping activities.
“Last year tourists spent about RM6.6bil on shopping, and RM10.7bil on accommodation,” she said.
“We want to organise more such events in the run-up to Visit Malaysia 2007,” she said.
“Malaysia received 5.8 million tourists from January to April this year,” she added.
“We are hoping to attract about 17.5 million tourists to Malaysia this year. We anticipate RM37.6bil in tourism revenue,” she said, adding that next year’s target was 20.1 million tourists.
